Balance Talking with Listening

Have you every been around someone that never seems to shut-up? What’s more, do they often just seem to talk about themselves? And, when you actually get the chance to speak, do they cut you off or take what you said and turn it around and focus it on themselves?

What can you do with people like that?

Truthfully…not much.

But here is the thing: what we can do is learn from them. Now, I am not talking about learning from their words, although that could happen; rather, I am talking about learning from their example. Let’s be honest. Most of us have been guilty of that very same thing at times in our lives. That’s especially true of those of us who have to sell ourselves or our products for income, recognition, and success. But…even so, we need to be careful.

Think about those times when you have come in contact with these folks. Did they win your over? Did you feel connected? Probably not.

I must tell you that my wife helped me with this one. Many times, as I was trying so hard to sell my business, I would open mouth and dump. Yep…I did that. And, what’s more, I am not at all proud of that. Did it work? NO!

The truth is, people connect with those they feel a give and take with. People connect with those individuals that offer empathy or demonstrate a true caring spirit. You can’t do that if your mouth is always open and your ears aren’t. Let me tell you…if you give people a chance to talk, they normally will. What’s more, when they do, you can learn a great deal from what they say and how they say it. They might even tell you how what you do can meet their need or needs. This has happened to me several times.

But perhaps the most important thing to remember: People like to hang-out with, visit with, and yep…even do business with those they LIKE. And one of the best ways to be liked is: LISTEN! What’s more, ask questions? People love to respond to questions that are asked with true interest. Do that and you will immediately connect.

So here is where it gets real…

Think for a moment: “Do I talk too much? Even worse, doo I talk about myself too much?”

Hey…I had to do that myself…with my wife’s help, of course. 🙂

And my answer was…YES.

If yours is too…make a concerted effort to change that starting today. Make yourself ask at least 3 questions to the person with whom your are speaking. It really doesn’t matter what the questions are as long as they are personal and presented with interest.

And here is the key, folks…

LISTEN to the answers!!!

Okay…so there is my Magic Mindset suggestion for today. Now go out and life your best life possible.

Love and blessings,

Keith
